IDCThe “Metaverse” hype bubble died. The actual XR industry posted record numbers in 2025–2026.
People keep mixing up a failed corporate rebrand and a normal mid-cycle hardware dip with the whole medium dying. Meanwhile shipments, indie revenue, and social VR just hit all-time highs.

IDCLook past the rage-bait at what actually happened.
🔴 The narrative: VR headset shipments cratered in 2025. Nobody's buying VR anymore.
🟢 The reality: Meta Quest shipments fell 42.3% YoY in H1 2025 (a DRAM shortage plus an inflated 2024 comparison base), and Apple Vision Pro fell to roughly 45,000-90,000 units after its 2024 launch year. That's the replacement-cycle dip every hardware launch has. Total XR shipments across the whole category still grew +44.4% YoY, because smart glasses took off.
🔴 The narrative: Reality Labs is bleeding money, so the whole VR push failed.
🟢 The reality: Meta's own numbers are real and brutal. Reality Labs lost $19.19B in 2025 alone, ~$88B cumulative since 2020. That's the cost of building silicon, waveguides, and AI glasses, and it says nothing about whether people are using VR. Corporate "metaverse" projects flopped, sure, but user-built social VR kept growing the whole time: VRChat hit an all-time peak of 156,716 concurrent users, and Gorilla Tag passed $100M in revenue with 3M MAU. Nobody left virtual worlds. They left Meta's version of one.
🔴 The narrative: Big publishers shut down their VR divisions. There's nothing left to play.
🟢 The reality: $50M cinematic AAA campaigns were never going to work on a 25-30M-headset install base. The math never worked. Lean indie and AA studios filled the gap instead, and they're printing money: Ghosts of Tabor hit $30M revenue and 1M+ units sold ahead of its PSVR2 launch, and over 100 Quest titles crossed $1M+ in revenue in 2025 alone.
🔴 The narrative: PCVR has been stuck at ~1-2% of Steam for years. Flatline.
🟢 The reality: ~1.0-1.75% of a Steam userbase that's roughly doubled since 2019 means a lot more actual humans than that same percentage meant five years ago. It's a share of a growing pie, not a flatline. Within VR headsets specifically, Quest 3 leads Steam's VR crowd at roughly 27%.
🔴 The narrative: Gaming had a brutal 2024-2025: mass layoffs, studio closures everywhere. VR is just a gaming niche, so it's dying too.
🟢 The reality: Two things get conflated here. Gaming revenue isn't shrinking. It posted record revenue, $201.6B in 2025, +9.1% YoY, while going through a brutal consolidation cycle (~45,000 cumulative layoffs since 2022). Jobs got cut. Demand didn't. And XR was never just gaming: IDC's own 2025 report is literally titled "From Gaming to Gaining." Enterprise AR/VR shipments grew +14.9% YoY in 2024, education deployments +69.4% YoY, and AWE co-founder Ori Inbar put enterprise use cases at roughly 71% of the XR market at AWE USA 2025. Most people calling VR dead have only ever seen the gaming headlines.
